The future of circular economy

Back in 2015 in Paris, the international approach to climate protection was established under international law for the first time and ratified by most UN member-states in 2016. This starting point ultimately led to the European Green Deal in the EU and, consequently, to several regulations and strategies that will have a significant impact on the future of waste management. With the European Green Deal, Europe is demonstrating unprecedented speed in the transition of society for climate and resource protection, already known in waste management as “circular economy”.

Whereas yesteryear, waste incineration was an indicator of a highly technologized resource for environmental protection, today the European Green Deal no longer labels waste incineration as sustainable. Sustainable financing of climate and resource protection cannot only be ensured by controlling municipal investments, as well as subsidies alone, but the EU also guides private sector sustainable financing through its “Strategy for Financing the Transition to a Sustainable Economy”. The EU is aware of its responsibility with its pioneering role and the impact this has on the wider international community. Moreover, Europe is significantly involved both in World Bank financing and in establishing financing conditions. Certainly – with some delay – the EU’s financing conditions will also influence the World Bank’s subsidy conditions for international waste management.

In this workshop, we will first present an overview of the EU strategies and regulations also giving an outlook on further concretization of the European Green Deal concerning waste management, especially through the steering effect of EU financing and subsequently international financing. Over the following two days, the measures and technologies of waste management across their evolution, state-of-the-art and future challenges and the need for adaptation will be presented, elaborated, examined and discussed.
