Materials In Works

Website:

www.materialsinworks.com

Company Overview:

Founded by a group of enthusiastic packaging material experts, the Malaysia-based start-up Materials In Works (MIW) is tackling global warming and environmental pollution by reintroducing residual paper liner from the label packaging industry back into the value chain as recovered cellulose pulp. Thus, the start-up prevents the valuable paper liner residues from ending up in landfills and focuses on recovering the cellulose pulp as a raw material which meets the need of local paper manufacturers.

Why the company should be selected as SDG winner:

Malaysia’s landfills are quickly piling up. A single person is estimated to generate over 35kg/month of waste that ends up at landfills. Worse still, the label packaging industry contributes a massive 500 tons of paper liner waste per month, and due to the silicone content on the paper, it is treated as solid waste. Across Southeast Asia, waste paper liner from the label packaging value chain is also mostly disposed via the landfill method. At these landfill sites, pollution is also a very common problem, where contaminated water, such as Leachate can harm the surrounding environment. It is clear that there is a pressing need to tackle the issue of rising landfill waste, in Malaysia and Southeast Asia more broadly, and Materials in Works (MIW) has the solution for this. At MIW, we have devised proprietary solutions to these problems at the landfill. We have an IP-backed treatment process that recovers cellulose back into raw material for paper manufacturers, it helps in diverting the valuable waste from ending up in landfill sites. This is mutually beneficial for the environment and the paper industry, as price and availability of raw material are key concerns for players. We measure below Impact Indicators (Output based): – Amount of recovered cellulose recovered and upcycled for commercial use in the last 12 months (e.g. 600 tons). – Number of trees saved from being cutting down (One ton of paper liner is made by 13 trees). – Amount of t of CO2-emission offset produced (One tree is absorbing average 200kg of carbon over its lifetime). With 70% of the Malaysia market, MIW is able to save 54,600 Trees from being cut down, which is equivalent to offsetting 10,920t of CO2 emissions per year. As such, with the proprietary upcycling solution, MIW is able to reduce CO2 emissions by 79%, in comparison to conventional landfill disposal methods. All in all, MIW can save 59,778 t of CO2 been emitted which is equivalent to taking 13,000 cars off the road for 1 year.

Company:

OURZ GmbH

Website:

https://ourz.world/

Company Overview:

OURZ is a software startup from Flensburg, Germany, founded in 2021 that connects sustainable consumption with food production. The food & beverage industry is responsible for a third of global emissions, it is the main driver of deforestation around the world, it is seriously threatening the condition of our oceans, and it is built on the exploitation of animals & humans. Things have to change! More and more companies take up their responsibility to positively transform the industry, while consumers increasingly demand sustainable products. OUR(Z) mission is to empower quality- and sustainability-oriented producers, manufacturers, and consumers to change our world for the better. Through our blockchain-based platform, we have taken on the fight against the lack of transparency within the food & beverage industry. By providing direct and unalterable insights into the history of products, OURZ enables sustainable companies to differentiate themselves from their (greenwashing) competitors and provides sustainability-conscious consumers with the information they need to shape a better world through their actions. Essentially, we provide direct and unfalsifiable insights into the different stages of supply chains, both in real-time and retrospectively. In this way, we create a direct, digital, and trust-based connection between all those involved in a product. In short: OURZ is dedicated to unveiling the true value (or cost) of products, enabling the sustainable transformation of the food & beverage industry, and to making our world OURZ again

Why the company should be selected as SDG winner:

OURZ ensures sustainable consumption and production by improving transparency for global food supply chains (SDG 12). Thus, consumers can distinguish truly sustainable products from supposedly sustainable ones and avoid unconsciously supporting companies that engage in greenwashing. “64% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products, 74% don’t know how to identify them” -Green Print 2021. Our app solves exactly this problem. Up until this point, we have made approx. 6 million packages traceable and have already generated over 1 million consumer interactions. By being able to identify unsustainable production methods immediately, companies will inevitably be forced to produce and supply their products more sustainably. Because sustainability is becoming more and more attractive to consumers nowadays, this has not only ecologically positive effects on the environment but also economic ones for the respective companies. Another SDG that OURZ supports is building a resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive, sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation (SDG 9). Our specially developed, extremely energy-saving blockchain consumes less energy than a refrigerator. This technology can be used to document product quality and thus prove process parameters that require documentation. Different partners can access this data, each with a different focus and each in such a way that only the information that is really relevant to them is available. Furthermore, OURZ also touches on SDG 13. Our app takes urgent action to combat climate change and its impact by increasing sustainability awareness and more conscious purchasing. Our app displays various information regarding the product’s sustainability, such as e.g. CO2 emissions during its production or the exact origin of specific ingredients. This enables consumers to not only reduce their ecological footprint but also to contribute to the sustainable transformation of the industry as a whole.

Free Pack Net Holding Sagl

Website:

www.freepacknet.com

Company Overview:

Business type – Unique in the world, in accordance with the Circular Economy, Free Pack Net introduces in the Large White Goods global market a new type of Reusable Transport Packaging called RPP- Returnable Protective Packaging, through which the environment and products are protected from the factory to the end customer. Through the PaaS-Product as a Service formula, the RPP is rented (the rental cost includes Reverse Logistics) to the white goods producer at a cost similar to the cost of disposable packaging. The appliance manufacturer packs its products and ships them to the retailers. The RPP, tracked with RFID, is taken from the Retailers who sell and deliver the product to end customer. The RPP is taken up by Free Pack Net at the Retailers’ warehouses, sanitized and supplied to factories. After 20 rental cycles, the RPP is recycled and the material is used to produce new RPPs. Scope and Objectives – since the beginning, as a pioneer change maker, the purpose of Free Pack Net has always been to circularly raise awareness, involve and support producers, retailers and institutions towards a sustainable change in line with the planet’s needs. It was a difficult task not usually undertaken by individual citizens with a dream to realize. The initial objectives have been achieved, 1) damages eliminated, 2) zero waste and CO2 emissions reduced by by 77% , 3) TCO reduced 4) ISO-TC 323 Circular Economy – Free Pack Net relevant business model and environmental results has been identified as one of the seven global companies that will represent the Circular Economy within the standard, 5) in the Nov 30, 2022 revision of Directive EC 94/ 62 PPWD, the European Commission mentions in art. 26 that by 1 January 2030 90% of Large White Goods must be packaged with Reusable Transport Packaging. Enable manufacturers to achieve 90% coverage within 8 years. In 2023 production will start in 4 continents with the scope to reach the 50% of the global market in 5 Yr.

Why the company should be selected as SDG winner:

As we are the only company in the world that had the courage to face the problem and solve it globally? As the world of household appliances and relevant business model is so linear and entrenched as to make it impenetrable? As global manufacturers are quoted with factories all over? As retailers are quoted and some of them with global organizations? As institutions are slow in making decisions related to change? As we are a small company? As it took 20 years after the inspiring document of the European Commission called Green Paper on the Integrated Product Policy of February 2000 to achieve the goal? No, for any of these reasons, but only for those indicated below: 1) there is no right way to do a wrong thing 2) I can do attitude make impossible possible. Thank you
